How to make a strapless bra

It seems obvious that you can't wear a strapless outfit with an ordinary bra. But sometimes, a strapless bra may not come handy or cheap. Then, how do you make your own strapless bra?

Below are some tips on how can make a strapless bra from an ordinary one.

1. Convert Your Normal Bra into a Strapless Bra

By removing the straps from a regular bra, you can make it strapless. But it's not always that simple. Most ordinary bras will not stay up without the straps.

The answer lies in securing the bra without using the straps over the shoulders. You just need detachable bra straps or a replacement bra strap. This is how you do it:

  1. Secure one side of the strap at the back of your bra
  2. Bring it around your body, above your bust
  3. Hook the other end onto the back side of your bra

Note: You can use this trick to secure a strapless bra that keeps falling. This time, however, the strap should go below your bust.

2. Use a Convertible Strap Bra

Some convertible bras are designed to be worn with straps, or without. If you remove the straps, the bra should still stay up. Their versatility makes them easy to wear under virtually any outfit.

If your bra doesn't stay up after removing the straps, use the bra hack described above. You can also use two-sided fashion tape or fashion glue.

3. Tuck in Your Bra Straps

Tucking in the shoulder straps will transform any bra into a strapless bra. But not all bras can accommodate the straps inside the cups. Most of them will feel uncomfortable and look awkward under form-fitting dresses.

Bras that are ideal for tucking in the straps are the camisole styles. The straps are filmy and thin. So, they occupy little space inside the cups. A good example is a spaghetti sports bra like the one pictured.

4. Drop the Straps From the Shoulders

You can wear your strapless dress with a normal bra and just free the straps from the shoulders. This technique works best with off-shoulder or strapless dress with sleeves.

The straps may sometimes frustrate you by showing up under the short/mock sleeves. To avoid this, use bra straps concealers to keep the straps in place.

5. Sew Bra Cups inside Your Dress

If you have a strapless dress that stays up by itself, you don't need to wear a bra. However, you may feel that you still need more coverage, especially if the dress is made of thin fabric, or is not lined properly.

You can buy custom sew-in bra cups or use the front half of a cheap or old bra. To attach the cups, use a needle and thread to temporarily fix them onto the dress and wear it first. If you need to do any adjustment, do it before securing the cups.

6. Replace Bra Straps With Invisible Ones

This is the ultimate answer for ladies with a big bust. If you feel that no bra can support you adequately without straps, look out for invisible clear replacement bra straps. If you have a bra with detachable straps, you just need to hook on the clear ones.

If you don't have a detachable bra, here's what to do;

  1. Take an ordinary bra with a well-fitting band
  2. Remove the straps using a pair of scissors or razor blade
  3. Pick a ribbon from an old outfit, or obtain from a seamstress
  4. Cut the ribbon into 4 pieces each about 3 inches in length
  5. Fold each ribbon into half along the length
  6. Sew each inside the bra where you cut off the old straps
  7. You now have a way of hooking the clear straps

Wearing a strapless dress is sexy and cool. The only challenge comes in the choice of a bra. If you still can't solve the issue of a falling bra, use fashion glue.

Which one of the above techniques for making a strapless bra looks best for you? Go for that choice and wear your strapless outfit with confidence and a smile.
